Historical question: Have U.S. police _ever_ used projectiles against
protest demonstrators before? The most likely recent instance would
have been in Seattle against the anti-globalist demonstrators in 1999.
Does anybody recall? What about Chicago, 1968?

A Google newsgroup search reveals that as of this morning (Tuesday)
this news event is being discussed only on newsgroups such as
alt.rush-limbaugh, where historical musings are in short supply
among other things, including possibly the ability to spell "history".

So...Oakland. Assuming the police action had the mayor's approval,
then Jerry "Moonbeam" Brown has come a long way, eh?

I had even forgotten his last name. So I went to the Oakland Web site
and, interestingly enough, I had to click down another level to the
"City Hall" page even to find reference to the mayor's office, where
it was listed among "City Officials" after "City Manager", requiring
another click to find out who the mayor is. This led to the question
of how prominently other cities' Web sites position their mayors...

Chicago: Web site not responding; browser times out
Seattle: Front and center, "Ask the mayor..."
San Francisco: Link "Mayor's Office" prominently featured
