Here's how it works: two experienced, professional critics read and annotate each manuscript, then collaborate on a detailed, 3-10-page critique. If they feel the work has exceptional merit, they derive a 300-word capsule review which appears in the next issue of CROW Quarterly Review. The review is sent for free to over 600 book editors, agents, and theater and film producers. An enclosed reply card makes it easy for these decision-makers to respond to works that interest them. All genres are accepted for critique and exposure except poetry. The quarterly also includes classified ads. These ads are also referenced on the reply card to accommodate writers who are interested strictly in the exposure aspect of the service. Other features of the quarterly include summary/reviews of short work, Jackdaws (short, humorous descriptions of common writing afflictions), The Writer's CROW Bar (short essays about the essence of good writing), Good Words (excerpts from well- written books and from books about writing organized according to theme), and various feature articles. In keeping with its spirit of bridging the gap between the professions, the Forum page presents writer's and editor/agent/producer's Point of View (POV) columns side-by-side. Is it working? Absolutely. After three issues, over 70% of featured works have garnered at least one reply card expressing editor/agent interest. Over 80% of writers who have used the service are repeat customers or say they will use the service again; over 90% have written or phoned in unsolicited testimonials crowing about CROW. The manuscript critiques are 50 cents/page, $200 minimum. Summary/ reviews of short works are 4 cents/word, $40 minimum. Classified ads are 40 cents/word, $40 minimum. Founded by writers for writers, the service is far cheaper than most critique services--the intent is to subsidize the process with subscriptions to the quarterly. Interested writers can subscribe ($5/issue, $20/year), send a SASE for more information, or send Email to Kevin McCarthy (att!druks!kpmc). Ask for the quarterly at your local bookstore.
