I already have:

1. Fowler's Modern English Usage (2nd edition), revised and edited by
Gowers.
2. Handbook of TECHNICAL WRITING (5th edition) by Brusaw, Alred, and Oliu.

I will definitely be getting Garner's Dictionary of Modern Legal Usage (2nd
edition)

I'm looking for something more modern than Fowler.
Any opinions on the following, both by Bryan Garner?

Published in 1998, Dictionary of Modern American Usage has 752 pages, pages
are 9.58 x 6.82 inches.
Published in 2000, The Oxford Dictionary of American Usage and Style has 480
pages, pages are 8.19 x 5.47 inches.

The author has confirmed that:

"The Oxford Dictionary of American Usage and Style
is the abridged paperback version of A Dictionary of Modern American Usage,
which has about twice as much material."

**** I'm not being "clever" when I reflect that much of my habits,
and most of my joys, of writing actually come from having read people
like Evelyn Waugh -- and son Auberon of course. Not that are many
people "like" Evelyn. Their way with words, and with people, is in
the back of my mind when I tackle the kind of writing that gets the
world's work done. I think old Fowler would agree with me.
