The Brookings Institution and The MIT Press invite you to a demonstration
and discussion with Joshua M. Epstein & Robert Axtell, Brookings scholars
and the authors of our co-publication, *Growing Artificial Societies:
Social Science from the Bottom Up*.
The event takes place on THURSDAY, APRIL 24 starting at 10 AM in Room 111 of
the Whitaker College of Health Sciences building at 45 Carlton Street
(E25-111, located just behind the Kendall T-Stop, next to the MIT Medical
Department).
Epstein and Axtell will talk about the nature and research and policy
implications of their artificial society model, Sugarscape. Employing
cutting-edge techniques from computer science -- artificial life,
autonomous agents, evolutionary programming -- they can "grow" fundamental
social structures and dynamics, and test diverse theories in such vital
areas as economic development and trade, patterns of infectious diseases,
pollution, conflict and governance, population growth, and migration.
Of the book, Professor Robert Axelrod of the School of Public Policy at
University of Michigan says: "*Growing Artificial Societies* is a
milestone in social science research. It vividly demonstrates the
potential of agent-based computer simulation to break disciplinary
boundaries. It does this by analyzing in a unified framework the dynamic
interactions of such diverse activities as trade, combat, mating, culture,
and disease. It is an impressive achievement."
Wired Magazine writes: "Wave goodbye to the invisible hand of classical
economics. Through computer simulation, Robert Axtell and Joshua
Epstein...have revealed the dynamic and often irrational nature of the the
economy."
*Growing Artifical Societies* is an outgrowth of the 2050 Project -- a
collaborative effort of the Brookings Institution, the Santa Fe Institute,
and the World Resources Institute -- which aims to identify conditions for
sustainable economic and social development on a worldwide scale. Please
do attend our demonstration of this new interdisciplinary research, and
join the discussion on its research and policy implications.
