"Quasars and Mir"
by Jonathan McDowell
Discussion of the different kinds of quasars and of what
current observations mean. Plus of the US-Soviet Space Station
program.
at MIT Lab for Computer Science,
8th floor, room NE43-800,
545 Tech. Square, on Main St.
at railroad tracks, Cambridge.

Quasars are the most energetic sources of radiation in
the universe, turning the entire mass of a star into
energy every year, and often emitting powerful beams of
matter at almost the speed of light. Dr. McDowell has
been studying quasars using both ground based
telescopes and orbiting satellites, and will talk about
the different kinds of qua- sars we see and the ideas
we have about what the observations mean.
Much closer to home, he will also give an update on
Phase I of the International Space Station Program,
which involves visits by the US Space Shuttle to the
Russian Mir orbital station.
