A VERY special event is comming up called Serve New England
'94. More than 4000 people will spend 5 hours cleaning, painting and
repairing sites all over New England. There will also be hundreds of
people biking 66 miles. This is an event sponsored by HOPE Boston
Inc, an non-profit organization, to raise money for charities in New
England and around the world. Our honorary chariman is Govenor Weld
this year (it was Mayor Flynn last year).
This year I will be participating in the bike-a-thon and have
been collecting pledges. My goal is to collect at least $200 by May
14th. If you would like to sponsor me please contact me via email at
gilliam@im.lcs.mit.edu, phone at (617) 253-2612-office or (617)
354-1357-home or drop by my office at NE43-352 (call first). All
donations are tax deductable and I will furnish you with a receipt.
Below is the "official" blurb which gives details about HOPE
Boston Inc, and how you can participate in the cleanup or bike-a-thon
if you wish:
SERVE NEW ENGLAND/BIKE FOR HOPE 1994
Saturday, May 14th, 1994
Once again, HOPE Boston is sponsoring a fund raiser to support the poor
and needy in Boston, New England and throughout the World. This year
Governor William F. Weld is the Honorary Chairman of the event and will
declare May 14th to be Serve New England Day in the Commonwealth.
What is HOPE Boston?
--------------------
Founded in 1992, HOPE Boston is registered with the Internal Revenue
Service as a 501 (c) (3), tax-exempt, non-profit organization. Though
organized, administered, and funded as a separate organization, many of
HOPE Boston's volunteers are members of the Boston Church of Christ.
HOPE'S mission is to solicit and administer funds to help the poor and
needy in metropolitan Boston, New England and around the world. Funds are
raised through a variety of sponsored events where volunteers solicit
contributions from individuals and corporations. In the past 12 months,
HOPE has contributed funds to agencies and institutions in the Boston
metropolitan area, western Massachusetts, Providence, Rhode Island and
southern New Hampshire as well as international medical clinics and
educational projects.
Who Benefits?
-------------
In HOPE Boston's inaugural year over $900,000 in cash and
"gifts-in-kind" was raised though an Art Auction, Bike-A-Thon, Walk-A-Thon
and Serve Boston '93. Local businesses contributed products and services
and several local corporations participated in cash contributions and
matching gift programs.
Through future events, like Serve New England '94 and Bike for HOPE '94,
HOPE Boston will continue to raise funds for those who need our help and work
to increase our community's awareness and provide opportunities for service.
Here is a list of some organizations that have received financial
support from HOPE Boston:
o Big Sisters Association o Quincy Crisis Center
o Boston Healthcare for Homeless o Framingham Food Pantry
o Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston o MA Dept. of Social Services
o Children's Hospital Aids o NE Homeless Veterans
Program (CHAP) o Pine Street Inn
o Dimock Street Health Center o Rosie's Place
o Germain Lawrence School o Roxbury Youthworks
o Haitian American Cultural Center o Keene Community Kitchen, Keene, NH
o H.O.P.E. Worldwide Ltd. o Nashua Soup Kitchen, Nashua, NH
o Judge Baker House o Network Against Domestic Abuse
o MA Association for Mental Health o Service Providers Inc.,
o Warwick House of HOPE, Warwick, RI Springfield, MA
In addition, HOPE Express is a transportation provider servicing these
Community Health Centers:
o Bowdoin o Neponset
o Codman Square o Roxbury Comprehensive
o Geiger Gibson o Southcove
Alone, no one will feed all the hungry, house the homeless and cure the
world's sick. But working together -- each person doing their part -- we
can be the difference between life and death for many people around the
world. Ultimately, it is the sacrifice of individuals that keeps HOPE
alive...will you help?
What is Serve New England '94?
-----------------------------
Serve New England '94 is a fund-raising event sponsored by HOPE Boston,
Inc. in cooperation with the cities of Boston, Providence, Springfield, and
Worcester. Participants raise pledges from sponsoring friends and companies
to serve the previously mentioned cities. Five hours of community service
are performed. These projects include clean-ups, fix-ups, painting and lot
beautification. In 1993, over 80 projects were performed by the 3-4000
participants. Come join the fun and make an impact to meet needs in our
cities.
Volunteers will solicit funds in return for 5 hours of work to Serve
New England. Volunteers will then show up at designated locations in the
listed cities on Saturday, May 14th for the day's events:
8:30 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. Arrival/Registration
9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Serve New England
2:30 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Lunch/Concert & Rally
Celebration at Boston's Hatch Shell
At the event, volunteers will be divided up into smaller groups to work
on different projects throughout their city: cleaning up parks, picking up
trash, painting over graffiti, and other restoration projects.

---------------
1) Register! (Contact Harris L. Gilliam or the HOPE Boston office
directly at 617-357-SERV)

New England.
4) Raise pledges! Solicit and collect support for those in need. Use the
Sponsor Pledge Form (see #1) to ask friends, neighbors, co-workers and
family for pledges. Collect and return your pledges on Saturday, May
14th, the day of the event. By doing so you will help New England and
the thousands receiving aid from HOPE Boston.
5) Come and Serve New England! Be ready to serve New England 9:00a.m.-2p.m.
on Saturday, May 14th. Clean up and help improve our region! Enjoy a free
lunch and concert at 2:30 p.m. at the Hatch Shell to celebrate.
