R E T U R N O F T H E "P A N H A N D L E H O O K E R" ! ! ! (No, that was not a Clinton joke of some sort, although it certainly could be very easily made into one.) Check out the URLs, folx: Latest NGP model forecast run: 12hr Precipitation and Sea Level Pressures: http://www-pcmdi.llnl.gov/fiorino/wxmap/ngp/archive/98021212/ngp.alltau.prp.conus.htm 850mb Temps, Winds, and Relative Humidity. http://www-pcmdi.llnl.gov/fiorino/wxmap/ngp/archive/98021212/ngp.alltau.850.conus.htm Examine the last few charts in each of these. The Precip/SLP last charts shows a monstrous storm devouring the entire eastern half of the United States. The last charts of the 850m/rinds/RH shows that the precipitation falling over the upper midwest will be in the form of heavy, wet snow (below freezing temperatures at the 850mb level, about 2000ft above ground level). This is the biggest storm I've ever scene the NGP put out in the year or so I've been paying attention to it. Caveat: Reliability at such extreme range is poor, but this predicted monster storm has remained a feature for the last four consecutive model runs. The snow band may shift more to the Dakotas or eastward, or more could be in the form of rain, but at this point it looks like a two-footer. "Panhandle Hooker" is a meteorological term for a low pressure system that moves eastward out of the Rockies, intensifies explosively around the Texas and Oklahoma "panhandle" regions, then hooks northeast. They typically produce blizzard conditions on their northern side, with tornadoes and severe thunderstorms in the southern plains. This storm would be the first true major panhandle hooker blizzard in several years. You will need to access the URLs at top fairly quickly. The runs are redone every 12 hours, and older runs are not kept around forever. New NGP model runs can be accessed from http://www-pcmdi.llnl.gov/fiorino/wxmap/wx.conus.htm Y O U H E A R D I T H E R E F I R S T! (Why depend on the local weather geeks to lie to you, when you can go straight to the source for your latest forecast lies!) Of course, now that I've written this, the forecast models will puke the storm out into some wimpy thing that dives southeast into the Gulf and rains on Tampa. We'll see...... ------------------------------------------------------------------ D#lete "blizzard" to reply email.
