Well ... all of this talk about the relative performance of the DN330 and
the Sun 3 on the Dhrystone benchmark is interesting, but what about that
old standby, the Whetstone benchmark. We're a bunch of crufty old
Fortran number crunchers, and it would be interesting to know the
relative performance of the Sun 3 and the DN330 on Fortran code.
Comparing the C compiler performances against the Fortran (or maybe even
Pascal) compiler performances might give us an idea if there really is a
difference in the hardware speed, or if it is 'just' a better compiler
on one machine. By the way ... you are aware that the DN330 contains
a 12Mhz 68020, not a 16 MHz chip. I believe that Sun is using pre-screened
12 MHz 68020 chips which have had there clock rates pushed up to 16MHz.
It is my understanding that Motorola is just beginning to ship production
versions of the 16MHz chip, and that 'real' 16MHz products (ie. reliable
ones) won't be out for another couple of months.
