More on the DN330 Saga ...

The Whetstone ratings I listed in my earlier message about
the DN330 speed were taken using the -CPU 330 and -OPTALL switches. Apollo
shipped us a new set of AEGIS floppies (SR9.0.1) and a set of 68020 floppies
to be loaded on top of AEGIS (SR9.0.020), and a new Fortran compiler (version
8.34). I understand that the 'next' release of AEGIS (maybe SR9.2?) will be
a performance enhancement release (this comes from the software support
people at the 1-800 number). Our salesman tells us that the DN330 will not
be shipped with 16 MHz chips. All 16 MHz chips that they received are
going into the DN560 product. They consider the DN330 to be a product
destined for the software development and CAI markets which are less
performance sensitive. There is hope however ... Apollo is preparing new
products in the lower price range (less than the DN330 and DN560) using
the same 68020 /68881 chip set. I haven't seen a price list yet, but
we were just told that a color node with 2MB and 86MB disk would be about
$22,000 . The salesman didn't mention whether that was list or university
discounted price.
