I am planning to write a Tektronix 4105/4107 emulator for the
IBM PC, but do not want to reinvent the wheel. Has anyone already
written one that they are willing to share, or does anyone know of
one in the public domain? I am hoping to have the emulator work
with the CGA board first, and later with the EGA board. Thanks for
 any suggestions.

Subject: Need Beta Testers for Educational Software

NOTICE:
======

I have recently completed the first release version of an educational
graphics package called GRAPHIX. Therefore, I am in need of several
beta testers.

GRAPHIX requires an IBM PC with a minimum of 256K RAM, a Color/Graphics
adapter and an IBM or Hewlett-Packard plotter.

As a beta tester you will be given the most current version of GRAPHIX,
a manual, a set of forms to fill out and a self-addressed stamped
envelope to return it all in.

If you are interested, contact:

               William J. Joel
Division of Computer Science & Math

               JZEM@MARIST.BITNET

Please note, that because of the educational nature of the software, I
will only accept educators as testers; no administrators or students.

Thank you.

Subject: Parallel Processing applied to Ray-tracing

I am currently interested in learning as much as I can about ray-tracing.
Eventually I plan on applying the power of parallel processing to the
generation of ray-traced graphics. Does anyone know of anyone else doing any
applications of parallel processing to ray-tracing? Could any of you point
me towards some good books or papers on ray-tracing and/or application of
parallel processing to ray-tracing? It would be much appreciated.

                                  Thanks in advance,

Subject: Lisp on an IRIS?

We have just received an SGI IRIS workstation at our lab, and have heard
that there is (or soon will be) an implementation of Common Lisp, with a
Flavors package, that will run on it from Franz, Inc. Has anybody heard
of such, or perhaps used it? All of our code is currently in C, but
the prospect of a Lisp development environment is enticing. Any information
would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Subject: grey scale to halftone conversion

I'm outputting images on our laser printer. I am looking for
greyscale to halftone conversion routines.

I have a greyscale to halftone filter for 4x4 halftones (17 levels); but
before I try and generalize the routine, I'd like to find out if
someone else already has done a general greyscale to halftone
filter.

Well you are in luck. I have just finished a survey on this piece of
hardware for the last 4 months. I will give you two options, I forgot
the third however the third one on works on an IBM machine. Well,
they are

MIP-1024 Real-time image processor for multibus
VIP-1024 Real-time image processor for VMEbus.

Note that either one of them has the 512 version as well and also
they all can be configured with VMEbus/Multibus adaptors (vice vesa
is also true).

They will allow you to grabe a frame from a video disc player, a
video tape player or an instructment that produce PAL/NTSC composite
signal. The frame grabe speed within one video frame rate time 1/25
second or 1/30 second depending on whether your use the European or
American Standard.

One board costs around A$6,050.00 for the VIP-1024 and A$5,088.0 Note
that one board will give your variation in intensity of grey. If you
want full colour then 3 of these boards are needed (one master two
slave). However pseudo colour can be achieved with one board using a
different configuration. I think the agent could tell you the best
of doing this. I will give you the headquarter in Canda.

	Matrox Electronic System.

		QUE. H9P 2T4, Canada.
		Tel: (514) 685-2630
		Telex: 05-822798.

The feature that is very distinguish is that it can grabe a frame by
using one command from the host computer and digitised it and finally
stored in it's frame buffer in one video-frame rate time. The
configuration of the frame buffer is up to you either 512 X 512 or
1024 X 1024.

I am in the process of purchasing 3 MIP-1024 boards configured with
4 frame buffer each with resolution 512 X 512. It will cost us
around A$20,000.

I am not sure whether you are interested in my research here, it is
dealing with perspective display of terrain (using terrestrial
photogrammetry) and overlay it will symbols. let me know if you are
interested. Could you let me know what exactly you are doing there.
I will be using it either on the SUN 2/120 (multibus) or SUN 3/160M
(VME bus) with multi/VME bus adaptors.

NB that there are a lot of features I didn't mention about this
hardware such as convolution, averaging and so on. Check with
Matrox. They will provide you with the required detail. But don't
hesitate to contact me if you need more information.

Good luck.

My previous two trials were being rejected, so I have no choice but
	to send to mod.graphics.

Subject: New SGI IRIS-Users mailing list

For those people using, or interested in, Silicon Graphics graphics
workstations (or terminals), a mailing list has been created. The following
is a short description of the format:

Info-Iris@SUMEX-AIM.Stanford.edu

This discussion list focuses on Silicon Graphics Iris workstations
and software. Its purpose is to stimulate communication and sharing
between computer science research groups that are using or are
   interested in these machines.

An archive of messages is kept on SUMEX-AIM in the file:
      <BBOARD>INFO-IRIS.TXT

Requests to be added to or deleted from these lists, problems,
questions, etc. should be sent to Info-Iris-Request@SUMEX-AIM or
Bug-Iris-Request@SUMEX-AIM. Contributors who wish never to see error
messages from the TOPS-20 mailer should specify one of these addresses
as the return-path: of their messages.

I (Jon Elson) have a video animation controller nearing production.
It supports 3 models of Panasonic Video Recorder -- the 9600 (VHS)
the 8500 (3/4" Umatic format) and the AU-300 (1/2" M format, broadcast
quality, 20 min. / tape). The VHS machine costs about $2600, the
3/4" costs about $5500 and the AU-300 is out of nearly everybody's budget
at $18000. The controller is connected to the host computer by a simple
RS-232 serial line, and is sent commands of the form INSERT 10 12345 <CR>
to insert 10 frames at frame # 12345. It replies DONE <CR> when the frames
have been captured on the video tape. This system gives absolute single
frame accuracy across an entire video tape by recording a timing track on the
second audio track of the tape. SMPTE time code is not used because the
complexity and cost of the decoder is more than this whole unit costs.
I am planning to produce these units at $2000.00, ready to plug in and go.
(The recorder of your choice is extra, of course.) One of the prototypes
is cranking out Anheuser-Busch ads for network TV spots, and other spectacular
video work. If you are interested, send return mail or call me at :

Subject: Perspective View of Terrain

At the moment I like to be able to generate a perspective view of terrain
from a specify point given the DTM (Digitised Terrain Model) of the area.
Does anyone know where I can get hold of a software package which is in public
domain that can do that. Note that it should be able to run on a SUN 2/160
colour or SUN 2/120 monochrome or SUN 3/160C running UNIX 4.2 BSD.

Thanks.
