The way I make a 16x16 dither matrix is to start with a 4x4 and
"square" it. Here is some code. The numbers are specific to doing 6
level color dithering (to get full color from an 8 bit display).

/*
 * Basic magic square for dithering. Used to generate 16x16 & 4x4
 * dither matrices.
 */
int magic[4][4] =  {
 	 0, 14,  3, 13,
	11,  5,  8,  6,
	12,  2, 15,  1,
	 7,  9,  4, 10
};
/*
 * 16x16 dither matrix, computed from magic square in init_color.
 */
int dm16[16][16];

    /*
     * Expand 4x4 magic square to 16x16. 4x4 leaves obvious patterning, and
     * doesn't give us full intensity range (only 17 sublevels, we want at
     * least 51). Note that 8x8 would be sufficient, but 16x16 is easier to
     * build.
     *
     * magicfact is 49/16 so that we get numbers in the matrix from 0 to
     * 49: mod 51 gives numbers in 0 to 50, we want some chance that the
     * number is greater than a matrix entry, so the highest matrix
     * entry must be 49.
     */
    magicfact = 49./ 16.;
    for (i = 0; i < 4; i++)
	for (j = 0; j < 4; j++)
	    for (k = 0; k < 4; k++)
		for (l = 0; l < 4; l++)
		    dm16[4 * k + i][4 * l + j] = (int) (0.5 + magic[i][j] * magicfact
					  + (magic[k][l] / 16.) * magicfact);

Subject: Utah Raster Toolkit Release

A few months ago there was quite a bit of discussion about image raster image
formats and compression on comp.graphics. A couple of weeks ago Spencer
hinted that we would be releasing the Utah Raster Toolkit, which helps solve
many of these problems. Here's the complete announcement.

Cheers,
jp
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

		       THE UTAH RASTER TOOLKIT

The Utah Raster toolkit is a collection of programs and C routines for
dealing with raster images commonly encountered in computer graphics. It
provides the following major functions:

	* A device and system independent image format for storing images
	  and information about them. Called the RLE format, it uses
	  run length encoding to reduce storage space for most images.

	* A library of C routines for reading, writing and manipulating
	  images stored in the RLE format.

	* A collections of programs for manipulating and displaying RLE
	  images.

The Format:

  The device independent RLE file has two parts, the header, which stores
  information about the image (size, position, channel information,
  color maps, comments, etc), and the actual image data in a run length
  encoded format. The RLE format often requires about a third of the
  available space for most "image synthesis" style images. If the image
  does not compress well, the RLE format stores it as straight pixel data
  with little extra overhead. The format has been developed over the past
  five years at Utah.

The Library:

  C routines are provided for setting up and reading the image header,
  and for reading and writing the image a scanline at a time. Images can
  be read or written using two different methods. Using the "row" method,
  the library performs the RLE encoding and decoding. With the "raw" method,
  scanlines are constructed directly with RLE opcodes. Additional routines
  are available for generating dither matrices (e.g., for display programs
  running on devices with less than 24 bits of color).

The Tools:

  comp - Digital image compositor. Provides the operations over, atop,
  	       in, out, xor, plus, minus and diff on two images.
  crop	     - Crop an image
  repos - Change the position in the RLE header
  avg4 - Downfilter an image by 1/4, generating a matte channel if one
    	       didn't previously exist.
  fant - Rotate and/or scale in image by an arbitrary (float) value.
  smush - Perform a simple Gaussian filter on an image
  rlehdr - Dump the contents of the RLE header in human readable form
  rlesetbg - Set the background color stored in the RLE header
  rleaddcom - Add a comment to the RLE file's header
  rleswap - Swap, copy or delete channels in an RLE file
  rlebg - Generate a solid or variable background
  rleflip - Rotate an image by 90/180 degree increments
  rleldmap - Load a color map into an RLE file from a variety of sources
  applymap - Apply color map values to pixel values
  rlesetbg - Set the background color in the RLE header
  painttorle - Convert MacPaint files to RLE format.
  rletopaint - Convert RLE files to MacPaint
  rletops - Convert an RLE image to PostScript (graylevel)
  to8 - Convert a 24 bit RGB image to an eight bit dithered one
  tobw - Convert 24 bits to 8 bits black and white

  Display programs are provided for:
  getap	     - Apollo workstation...
  getbob - HP Series 300 ("bobocat") running Windows 9000
  getcx3d    - Chromatics CX1500 display
  getfb      - BRL "libfb" displays
  getgmr - Grinnell GMR-27 (remember those?)
  getX - Workstations running the X window system
  getmex     - Iris running Mex
  getiris - Iris in raw 24 bit mode.
             - [Note display programs for a particular device are
		simple to add]

  All the tools are designed to pipe together, so they can be used as
  filters on images much like the standard Unix tools filter text.

Plus:

  The raster toolkit also includes Unix man pages for the library and
  commands, some sample images, and additional documentation.

System Requirements:

  We have successfully ported the Raster Toolkit to a number of Unix
  systems, including 4.2/4.3bsd (Vax, Sun, etc), Apollo Domain/IX, HP
  Series 3000, SGI Iris, Gould UTX. Display programs are included for
  several devices. Creating display programs for additional devices is
  a straightforward task.

Distribution:

  For ARPAnet sites, the toolkit may be obtained via anonymous FTP to the
  site utah-cs, in the file pub/toolkit.tar. Sites not on the ARPAnet can
  obtain the Raster Toolkit on a 9-track, 1600 bpi tar format tape by
  sending check or money order for $200.00, payable to the Department of
  Computer Science, to:

	Attn: Utah Raster Toolkit, Loretta Cruse
	Department of Computer Science
	University of Utah
 	Salt Lake City, UT, 84112

  Courtesy Mike Muuss at BRL, the Raster Toolkit is also included as
  contributed software in the BRL-CAD distribution.

  Although the Raster Toolkit software is copyrighted, it may be freely
  re-distributed on a "GNU-like" basis.

Subject: What makes a graphics workstation so great for graphics?

	I'm a relative novice at this sort of stuff, so forgive what may
sound like a hopelessly naive question. We've been looking for software to
do molecular graphics on our Sun-3/160C (with the FPA, graphics processor
and graphics buffer boards). What we are finding out, however, is that all
the best software only runs on workstations like the Iris or some flavor of
an E&S. Never having used either of these latter two machines, I don't
understand what it is about them that makes them so much better than the
Sun for this type of stuff. Is it simply a matter of not enough MIPS
and/or MFLOPS (a problem which could, at least in part, be solved by
upgrading to a 260), or is there something more fundemental about these
machines that makes them so much better than the Sun?

Now available from SIMTEL20...

SURFMODL.ARC.1			BINARY	117534  F904H

SURFMODL is a general-purpose surface modeling program for the IBM PC
written in Turbo Pascal. Surface modeling is the science of producing
realistic three-dimensional images on a computer display. This
capability has existed on large mainframe and minicomputer
workstations for many years. Only recently has it migrated to smaller
computers, and the IBM PC is no exception. I wrote SURFMODL on a
Sanyo MBC-550, but it also runs on the IBM PC and most compatibles.
At this time, the only display board supported on the IBM is the Color
Graphics Adapter (CGA) and compatibles. Hercules and EGA compatibles
will not work with SURFMODL. It requires only 256K RAM, runs
amazingly fast, and is a general-purpose surface modeler. It creates
displays of three-dimensional wire frame images, it removes hidden
lines, and it performs surface modeling. Since it is a generalized
program, it can be used to view any object from any angle, with single
or multiple light sources. It is accompanied by PREPROC, a
general-purpose preprocessor.
[Late Note: I have ordered the Graphix Toolbox and plan to support the
Hercules and EGA boards in the next release. -kvc ]

When used in conjunction with a finite element preprocessor, a
special-purpose function generation routine, or PREPROC (the SURFMODL
preprocessor), SURFMODL is a complete surface modeling system, capable
of constructing models of any variety of objects of virtually
unlimited complexity.

Source files for SURFMODL are not being released to the public domain
at this time, but the executable files and sample data files are.
Source for the preprocessor is available on request.

Subject: Lecture 2-Mar at IBM (near San Jose): COLOR IN A GENERAL VISION SYSTEM

The following lecture will be given at IBM's Almaden Research Center
(just south of San Jose, California), for those interested and able
to attend.

THE ROLE AND USE OF COLOR IN A GENERAL VISION SYSTEM
G. Healey, Stanford University, Stanford, California

Comp. Sci. Sem. Fri., March 6 2:00 P.M. Room: B2-307

We show that an intelligent approach to color can be used to
significantly improve the capabilities of a vision system. This talk
is divided into three parts. In part I, we adopt general physical
models for the properties of objects which determine how they interact
with light. These models are far more general than those typically
used in computer vision. From these models we derive generic
properties relating color, geometry, and image irradiance. In part
II, we discuss the recovery and representation of color. We show how
to recover physical color from images captured using different
sensors. A metric space for colors is introduced and its significant
properties are described. Within this general framework for color, we
discuss the advantages of the specific representation employed by our
system. In part III, we use our physical models to derive powerful
algorithms for extracting invariant properties of objects from images.
The first algorithm is used for the generic classification of objects
according to material. The second algorithm provides a solution to
the color constancy problem. These algorithms have been implemented
and consistently produce correct results on real images. Some
examples of experimental results are presented.
Host: J. Sanz

(For further information on this talk, please contact the host
listed above.)

Visitors, please arrive 15 minutes early. IBM's new Almaden Research
Center (ARC) is located adjacent to Santa Teresa County Park, between
Almaden Expressway and U.S. 101, about 10 miles south of Interstate
280. From U.S. 101, exit at Bernal Road, and follow Bernal Road west
past Santa Teresa Blvd. into the hills (ignoring the left turn for
Santa Teresa Park). Alternatively, follow Almaden Expressway to its
southern terminus, turn left onto Harry Road, then go right at the ARC
entrance (about a quarter of a mile later) and go up the hill. For
more detailed directions, please phone the ARC receptionist at (408)
927-1080.
