An Information Model for an Engineering Information System
Gio Wiederhold
CIS conference room, Stanford University, 11am Thursday 4 Dec. 1986
We will prsent concepts about the information flow during the process
of the design of engineered objects, specifically electronic circuits
and systems. The intent of the model was to locate effective interfaces
between information-processing tasks and to consider the type of information
which is transmitted through those interfaces. This work was sponsored by
the Air Force VHSIC program to provide a basis for the development of
standards for interfaces in engineering information systems.
Bid proposals for building a prototype of a system to sopport the
design process are now being prpared.
The concepts relate only indirectly to the architectural choices for
engineering information systems.
A perfect match of the conceptual nodes identified in the
information-processing model to engineering system components cannot be
expected. System modules may encompass tasks that an information
model views as distinct, and may sometimes carry out only part of an
information task.
We are using some of the concepts in a proposal to develop techniques
to support parallel design with formal tools.
We will discuss these issues at the end of the presentation.
