EXPEDITION FRASER ISLAND 2nd November - 29th November
ANZSES The Exploring Society is a non-profit body that exists for the
personal and scientific development of Australians, and the production of
field science results for use by National and State organizations to preserve
and enhance the environment. To meet these aims, the Society mounts major
expeditions into rugged and at times unexplored parts of Australia: a non-profit
body striving to build our science knowledge and develop people for Australia's
future.
The Exploring Society will mount a scientific expedition into the remote
wilderness areas of Fraser Island 2nd - 29th November 1992. The expedition
will conduct valuable biological surveys for the Queensland National Parks and
Wildlife Service, and will include much adventure and challenge.
Planned in conjunction with QNPWS, projects will include observations of
night birds in the forests, a survey of the effects of burning on flora and
fauna in the heath and shrublands (including ground parrot habitat), a study of
the foraging behaviour of dingoes on the Island and a frog survey.
Fraser Island is the largest sand island in the world, with geomorph-
ology to match. Nominated for world heritage status, it boasts biological
features unique in Australia. With steadily increasing visitor pressure each
year (approx. 1/2 million per year) there is an urgent need to gather bio-
logical data in order to properly assess the impact of human visitation and
to formulate appropriate management strategies.
The Exploring Society is seeking participants of all ages for this extra-
ordinary scientific expedition.
Expeditioners will work in teams under the guidance of scientists
experienced in their fields. In the little-studied remote parts of the Island
they will gather data and make collections for the QNPWS. Science qualif-
ications or skills are not a prerequisite, but enjoyment of the outdoors and
camping, willingness to work as a team member for the benefit of the
environment, reasonable fitness, and the enjoyment of challenge and adventure
would be valuable attributes.
For further information and application forms, contact the ANZSES office at
the above address or phone. You may also make contact with me, in the first
instance, by personal E-mail or by phone as given below...BUT HURRY...we need to
have confirmed subscriptions in the next two weeks.
