The ANZIAM Victorian Branch of the Australian Mathematical Society
invites you to a Dinner and Lecture on

                     Tuesday 23rd July 1996

at University House, University of Melbourne. Welcoming drinks will
be provided from 6.30 pm, with the lecture at 7 pm and dinner at 8 pm.

The guest speaker is

                      PROFESSOR TERRY SPEED

of the Dept of Statistics, UC Berkeley and CMA at ANU speaking on

"Mathematical and Statistical aspects of the Human Genome Project"

Terry Speed grew up in Melbourne, and studied mathematics at Melbourne
University. He went on to a PhD at Monash, and subsequently went to
the University of Sheffield (UK). In 1974 he became professor of
Statistics at UWA, and in 1983 was appointed Chief of the CSIRO Division
of Mathematics and Statistics and later became Professor of Statistics
at U.C. Berkeley.

Terry has been noted for his contributions in many areas of mathematics
and statistics, and also to discussions of their place in society. His
current interest is in the application of statistics to genetics and
molecular biology. He is conducting research on models for genetic
recombination, on the analysis of DNA and protein sequences, including
the reconstruction of evolutionary trees from such data, and on a number
of questions relating to the genetics of the immune system and the human
immunodeficiency viruses. The Human Genome Project has also been the
stimulus for a number of the problems that he has investigated with his
students. (Terry was also an expert witness in the O.J. Simpson trial)

Cost is $30 including a 3-course dinner and drinks.

RSVP to Dr Michael Page M.A.Page@monash.edu.au
     or Dr Steven Carnie S.Carnie@maths.unimelb.edu.au

Please make cheques payable to ANZIAM Victorian Branch and forward
them by Fri. 19th July to Dr Michael Page, Dept Mathematics, Monash
University, Clayton 3168.

p.s. ANZIAM is the division of the AustMS with interests in all areas
of Industrial and Applied Mathematics.
