SEMINAR: Multicasting and ATM - why so complex?

SPEAKER: Dr Grenville Armitage
	  Internetworking Research Group
	  Applied Research Division
	  Bellcore.

DATE: 1:00pm, Thursday 1 February 1996

VENUE: Lecture Theatre E6 (Building 60)
	  Clayton Campus

[Dr Armitage is an ATM specialist with Bellcore, and is Bellcore's
representative in the ATM Forum's "Multiprotocol Over ATM" working group.
He is also active in the IETF's 'IP over ATM' working group, and is the
author and primary architect of the 'IP multicast over ATM' Internet Draft.]

ABSTRACT:

During 1995 the IP-over-ATM working group of the Internet Engineering
Task Force (IETF) has developed a general protocol for mapping the IP
multicast service onto the point to multipoint VC service provided
by ATM networks. Towards the end of 1995 the Multiprotocol Over ATM
(MPOA) working group of the ATM Forum decided to adopt the IETF's
solution for their own 'Layer 3 multicast over ATM' needs. This
talk will walk through the main characteristics of the IP multicast
model, the UNI 3.0/3.1 multipoint VC service, and the mapping
architecture finally adopted by the IETF.

[And quite probably Grenville can be prompted into making some general
comments on the state of ATM/IP standardization and development.]

ENQUIRIES: Ms Eryn Feher - (03) 9905 3402
	   Prof Jim Breen - (03) 9905 3298 - jwb@capek.rdt.monash.edu.au

PARKING: As this Seminar is being held before the commencement of the
Semester, there is ample parking available. Use the "blue" parking
areas.

[PS! Grenville is happy to talk to anyone interested in working for
Bellcore in areas like networking, ATM, cryptography, etc. People about to
complete PhDs in the field are of particular interest. He will be
available after the talk if anyone is interested.]

No plans, but the talk is likely to pop up under a Bellcore banner
during '96.
