Earlier this year it occurred to me that this would be the thirtieth anniversary of the Bed-In, though I honestly had no idea what month it took place in. A few weeks ago I did a search trying to find a date, and no success, though I admit I didn't get around to looking for books at the library. Wednesday morning I woke up and they were saying that it was the thirtieth anniversary of the first day of the bed in. I was going to post something here about it, didn't get around to it (like a lot of things) and then it was sort of in the news. The Gazette had a short article earlier this week, I think on Thursday. I can't find the section right now, though I know it's somewhere around and I will check for it later. It was just a brief item, mentioning that it took place thirty years ago. CJAD has something happening in the actual hotel room on Monday, during the Tommy Schnurmacher show. He was actually there thirty years ago, though this thing on Monday seems more like a publicity thing than a real remembrance. Of course, a lot of the famous people who where there during the Bed-In and on the actual recording are dead by now. Joe Schwartz, who does a chemistry call-in show on CJAD on Friday mornings, was saying the other day that he'd visited the Bed-In to interview John and Yoko for the McGill Daily. I wonder if they keep files going back that far? The Gazette this morning, Sunday, had a remembrance in the "Magazine" secion by someone who was there as a music writer for the Gazette. I haven't checked to see if it's on the Gazette's webpage at http://www.montrealgazette.com I once vaguely knew someonw (a friend of a friend) who was there, though I never heard the story from him and it's just name-dropping. It wsa Peter Sherman who worked for CJAD at the time, and later was station manager and even later moved to Toronto for some management position in the company. I always assumed that he'd been there for the recording, but as I hear Tommy Schnurmacher's tale of being there (he took care of Yoko's kid) and read the story this morning, I realize that a lot of people dropped by during the week of the Bed-In and could just as easily have been reporting on it as participating. I tried to talk the four guys in the window at The Bay to have a Bed-In to remember the thirtieth anniversary, but I see no sign of them doing so. Since I'm posting this to the newsgroup I might as well put in some pointers that I did come up with when I'd originally intended to post about the anniversary. It took place at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel, suite 1742 if the history sites are correct. It was their second Bed-In, the first taking place in Amsterdam in April of that year. That one would seem to have been mentioned in "The Ballad of John and Yoko". You can find the lyrics here: http://www.musica.org/letras/ing1/B14059.htm "Give Peace a Chance" itself was recorded at the hotel. People tend to know the refrain and forget (or not know) the rest of the lyrics, but it actually refers to people who were in the hotel room at the time of the recording. You can find those lyrics here: http://www.webaccess.net/~sr2002/lyrics/givpeace.txt John Lennon had wanted to hold the second Bed-In in the US, but he wasn't allowed in, so Montreal got the history. Which is why people like Allen Ginsberg and Timothy Leary (and Rosemary) came up to Montreal. Of course, later in 1969 John Lennon was back in Toronto for a big concert. I wonder if the lack of public comment about the thirtieth anniversary of the Bed-In will mean there won't be much said about the thirtieth anniversary of the first manned landing on the moon, and Woodstock (and Charles Manson).
