Are you saying that other languages are not offered in public schools?
 I was under the impression children in Vancouver have the opportunity
to learn Chinese.

Forcing kids to learn French is no different than forcing them to
learn algebra.  You certainly don't need algerbra to drive a car, do
your taxes, use plastic, etc.  Who do you know that actually used
their math or science or much of any other subjects?  The point is to
teach the kids to use and exercise their brains.
