Yes, it's that time again. The dance department at Concordia is having
one of their two end of term performances this weekend. These are wel
worth going to, because you see a broad range of material in a short span
of time. And the only way you can see something cheaper is if it's
free. I've seen some fairly bold pieces from time to time' I'm still
puzzling over the impact of a piece I saw 5 years ago. The quality of
the dance always seems good, but the choreography varies. Some is
fairly routine, while there is the occasional piece that is equal to
anything else going on in dance. Indeed, sometimes the pieces are
more daring, which may be a result of their beginner status. It seems
like as dancers become more elevated in the dance world, they will
take fewer chances. Once you start getting the audience, you have
to keep the audience so change is less likely to happen. These
pieces are meant for a small audience, where small gestures can
say a lot, rather than broad strokes needed when you have to reach
the top balcony at Place des Arts.

These things are always well attended, so get there early. Much of
the audience always seems to be friends and family, which guarantees
an audience, but doesn't reach people who have no automatic interest
in the pieces. Sadly, the performances never receive much attention by
the local press. On the other hand, you can't fit many more people into
that space to watch.

Also, in recent years they have split up the program, so that if you
attend two of the three shows you will see every piece.
