About the worst that can happen is that the phone doesn't work.
If you are messing around when someone calls, you can get respectable
sparks and minor shocks, because the ringing voltage is quite high.
Bell's circuits are well-protected -- or so I believe -- so you
won't damage their eqipment if you accidentally short-circuit the
wires coming to your house.

The only problem that I have encountered is that very old phones
may not ring on incoming calls, although you can both speak and
listen. The solution is to rewire the phone, but I don't recommend
this unless you are confident that you understand its internal wiring.

Peter -- assuming no responsibility for shocks, electrocution, or other
problems caused by tampering with telephone wiring.
