I'd have to say that the french speakers did not try to assimilate the
Irish immigrants of the 1830s and 40s with respect to their names. Today
you will find some people of Irish descent, with names such as QUINN and
RYAN who do not speak any english. In 1847-48, when many Irish immigrants
were arriving with typhus at Grosse-Ile or arrived dead their children were
adopted in the local communities. One of the conditions was that they keep
their names. If the children grew up speaking french it's as a result of
the generosity of the locals in adopting them. They at least kept their
names.

The french did not take Gaelic from the Irish. If you were a child growing
up in a community of esperonto speakers, you would adapt and use that
language to communicate. It's common sense.

A good genealogist knows how to explore all possibilities in doing his
research. As a matter of fact, people researching french Canadian (Quebec)
genealogies have a very easy time of it compared to other researchers.
