My fault for making it less than clear. Racism was considered, at the turn of the century, to be a progressive science and a social tool. Essentially, it was culturally in vogue to be a racist. Therefore, racism and fine culture aren't mutually exclusive. Somme people believe most racists are white trash, unemployed, bitter paramilitary freaks. They make the same mistakes as racists by using a blanket stereotype. How can you counter one person's mistaken assumptions with mistaken assumptions of your own? Keeping yourself ignorant of your opponent is never a wise strategy. My apologies if this is all dull, obvious and stupid.
