SCSI-1 & SCSI-2

I'm really a novice with SCSI devices and I'm just wondering if a SCSI-2 device
(such as a removeable drive or hard drive) can be used with a SCSI-1 host adapter
(such as QLogic's FAST!SCSI BASIC E ISA-to-SCSI adapter) ? and if so, is there any
performance loss because of using a SCSI-1 instead of a SCSI-2 adapter?

I have read the FAQ file in the comp.periphs.scsi but couldn't get a precise
answer to my questions.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
