Femme Flicke Film Nite
Come out for a night of girl-made movies!
Where: Bookcellar Cafe on Mass Ave in Porter Square,
Cambridge, two blocks from the subway stop.
When: Saturday July 27, 7-9pm
What: Lots of short movies by today's freshest female
image makers and story tellers!
Here's a sampling:
Lady (Out)laws and Faggot Wannabes by Tammy Rae Carland
20 minutes; 1995
with Heidi Arbogast, Miriam Basilio, Carla Bedrosian, Tammy Rae Carland,
Elitrea Frye, Diana Morrow, Kaia Wilson, Melissa York,
From the editor of the I (Heart) Amy Carter zine, this experimental video
traces the historic "criminality" (and laughable clinical diagnoses) of female
homosexuality and the unspoken state of loss within gay communities by using
elements of documentary, music video, erotic film, and educational filmstrips.
Set to a soundtrack of new songs by lesbionic action rockers Team Dresch, this
video simultaneously exposes and subverts old stereotypes and offers a new &
improved view of lesbianism.
In 1993, Bikini Kill Toured the UK: It Changed My Life
by Lucy Thane
30 minutes; 1994
with Bikini Kill, Sister George, The Raincoats, Skinned Teen, Huggy Bear
This energetic, tightly edited video documents the impact "girlbands" like
Bikini Kill have had on young women at-large. The film weaves live footage with
candid behind-the-scenes interviews with band members (and more Kathleen Hanna
than you may ever care to see). Any girl worth her clit ring in punk rock will
likely wet her pants at the sight of BK's Kathi Wilcox hanging with The
Raincoats. But, the most radical footage shows the fans at clubs, talking about
"feminist" and "riot grrrl" labels.
Pro-choice Is Pro-life by Jane Pratt
1/2 minute; 1990
Warning: Patriarchal Values May be Hazardous to Your Health by Donna Olson
1/2 minute; 1992
Sexual Harassment by Jane Pratt and Patti Munter
1/2 minute; 1990
These three women-made shorts are just part of the "Direct Effect" series of
informative and inspirational public service announcements produced by C00 Film
Corp.
Road Movie: Or What I Learned in a Buick Station Wagon
by Sarah Jacobson
10 minutes; 1993
with Beth Moran, Hugh Garvey, Dan Dupuy, Allan Heifetz, Allegra Inganni
This quick-witted flick from the maker of I Was A Teenage Serial Killer
chronicles the trials and tribulations of an aspiring filmmaker. Bombarded with
the irrelevant and nay-saying opinions of boys around her, the protagonist
flees the small minds of Minnesota in search of the understanding and support
she imagines she'll find in NYC.
Good Sister/Bad Sister by Liza Johnson
30 minutes; 1996
with Angela Bales, Julie D, Marilyn Billingsley, Michelle Hanks, and Chinchilla
This "mockumentary" exposes the insane shape women's lives can take in a
society where women are considered second-class citizens. Three women
(actresses playing Courtney Love, Courtney's mom Linda Carrol, and feminist
outlaw Katherine Power) discuss their lives, which have been twisted into
nonsense by patriarchal society at large. The one reliable voice is that of the
narrator who gives factual background on the "characters." Ultimately we see
that as separate as these three lives are, they're uncannily alike.
I Really Wanted You by Anjali Sundaram
5 minutes; 1996
with Pansy Division
Honeycomb by Mary Timony and Brett Vapnek
5 minutes; 1996
with Helium
These rad girl-made music videos prove there's more to the MTV genre than Spike
Jonze.
