I actually read all those posts on this topic, and here's this gay man's read on the situation: If Clay were to perform that act on a streetcorner, I'd like to try to get him prosecuted under the hate crimes statute. (not at all a likely scenario, just one which intrigues me -- how protected _is_ public speech when it advocates violence?) :> Really, though, I like the comedy connection. I patronize them several times a year and recommend them to my friends... but it's a simple moral dilemma for me to support an establishment which gives a forum to such a bigot. It it were in an .edu context with discussion and analysis, okay, I can intelectuallize away the instinctive twinges of discomfort, because I know his views will be challenged and evaluated. As it is, I pronounce my judgement that Clay's performance is sick and wrong, and that Boston's community standards are higher than that. :> Be your own judge: go or don't go, protest or don't, but think about whether hating jews or queers or women is something you can live with. Is it funny? Does it make you feel good to belittle others? Do you enjoy promoting violence against people like your mom, your sister, your brother, and your neighbor? Don't shield bigots with the shroud of free speech -- that's sick. Clay's spech is commerce, pure and simple. And my money will go elsewhere, perhaps to groups like Real Men which try to open discussion by fostering a little dissent. Not trying to be PC, just advocating a little sanity in the world. -- Rik Rik Ahlberg | Email Boston-RSI-request@world.std.com to join the rik@world.std.com | east coast discussion for folks with typing injuries
