The Cold War *was* the Third World War.  Just because it's got a III in
it doesn't mean it's an automatic free pass to armageddon.  There are
many ways a world war could happen and this one -- primarily a war of
economic attrition with battles fought throughout the planet in places
like Cuba, Southeast Asia, Zaire/Congo, Cuba, Central America, Korea,
China & Taiwan, Germany, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Angola, Mozambique,
etc. (and even, to a limited degree, in outer space) -- is just as much
a world war as the others were.

Anyone who was involved in it...

... will easily attest to the fact that this was just as much a war as
any other war was.

The situation with World War II is analogous.  Well into the fighting
of it, people still referred to World War I as The World War, and the
designation of World War II as a world war didn't come until the fog of
presentism had cleared sufficiently well to see what was what.

The same holds true for the Third World War and the present-day Fourth
World War.
