Plan for distributing usage statistics

Thanks for responding to my questionnaire about what network traffic statistics
would be of interest and how best to delivery these to you.

I will incorporate your comments into my next batch of reports. For now, my
plan is to continue to produce line utilization graphs, one report per week. I
will solve the problem of branch nodes needing to distinguish local traffic
from transit traffic and will probably rotate and rescale the graphs and tweak
the date/time labels a tad.

I will send out Postscript messages as before. If you occasionally want other
formats, just ask and I'll see what I can do.

I will tailor who gets the results on a per-site basis, starting with the
information you already gave me. Sites that have not instructed otherwise will
get graphs sent to the Technical Liaison only.

Regards,
Dan

P.S. Expect the next batch in a few days.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Below is the tally of results to the questionnaire:

1. Do you have any suggestions/comments/questions about the format/content of
the weekly line utilization graph you just received?

graph looks great/fine/good/useful/interesting/enlightening (14)
graph should start on Saturday or Sunday to show weekend more clearly (1)
include the day in addition to the date on the x-axis (1)
make the axis labels easier to read (1)
show lines for the hours (1)
draw graph in landscape mode (2)
graph should be scaled so max utilization is at top instead of 100% (3)
branch nodes need to differentiate local and transit traffic (3)
branch nodes need to see any redundant lines to their sites (1)
postscript level 1 printer doesn't like the PS file (1)

2. What reports would you like to see in the future?

5 A. Line utilization (one report per month showing entire month)
12 B. Line utilization (one report per month showing each week)
9 C. Line utilization (one report per week)
12 D. Site traffic volume (historical)
6 E. Site network availability
5 F. NEARnet-wide traffic volume (historical)
        G. Other (specify)
2 Per-service breakdown (not possible with current router software)
1 Raw delta-bytecount graph (similar to utilization graph?)

3. Which reports from question 2 are most important (i.e. which one(s) would
   you like to see soonest)?

B and C

4. How important is it that you receive this information?
        (1=critical, 2=important, 3=nice, 4=not important, 5=don't want)

Average = 2.5

5. What format would you prefer to get reports in?

        A. raw numbers (SNMP polls) in tab-separated format (57KB/day)
        B. timestamp & utilization% only in tab-separated format (15KB/day)
        C. Postscript output of graph(s) of selected data (~38KB/graph)
(e.g. line utilization, traffic trends, etc.)
        D. Textual description/interpretation of data (small)
        E. Other (specify)

Almost unanimous C's with a few B's and D's and a couple A's.

6. How would you like to receive it?

        A. Email for text & Postscript (separate messages, where appropriate)
        B. Email for text & Postscript (MIME format)
        C. Email for text, FAX for graphs
        D. FAX for both text and graphs
        E. Other (specify)

Almost unanimous A's with one B

7. Who should receive it?

        A. Just the technical liaison
        B. Both the technical liaison and the administrative liaison
        C. A special mailing list or email address (specify)
        D. Other (specify)

A mix of A's and B's and a few C's
