OPUS-CBCS v1.73a
Welcome to BCS Telecomm and Photo Talk BBS - 101/206 & 101/122
in the FidoNet nodelist.
This board is currently combined due to some problems with the
computer running Photo Talk. Since both boards share the same
sysop and many of the same areas it was felt this would serve
the needs on a temporary basis as we attempt to rebuild Photo
Talk's computer. The Telecommunications Group of the Boston
Boston Computer Society runs this system. None of the opinions
expressed in messages found on this system should be construed as
to be any semblance of official BCS policy and should be regarded
as being strictly the opinions and observations of the message poster.
It is policy of this board that your full and proper name be
used along with the recording of your mailing address and your
phone number in your user records.

Welcome to Photo Talk & BCS Telecomm BBS!

There may be some problems coming soon!
There was some e-mail yesterday that came from the BCS Board
of Directors that stated that not only were all publications of
the BCS to be rolled into three pubs but that there would be only
3 BBS's left in the BCS. Even though there was no mention in
the message which boards would be continuing it is obvious that
they would be the IBM board, the Macintosh board and the Info
Center board.
What this would mean is this board would be closed down by the BCS
management. We need your immediate input to the BCS office and, in
particular, the Board of Directors to protest this action that will
directly affect your use of online services of the Boston Computer
Society. As you know, this BBS has been running continuously ever
since I took over the operation a number of years ago, even when we
have seen the IBM, Mac and Main boards being offline for extended
periods of time. A good example is the current status of the IBM
bulletin board which has been offline for almost 2 months.
So if you want this board to continue then please call the BCS
Office and let your concerns be heard. BTW, I have not had any
reimbursement for the phone bills on the operation of this BBS
for over 2 years, so you can let them know that fact, as well.
Info Center numbers
The phone numbers for the BCS Info Center TBBS are as follows:
290-5726 290-5728
The IBM board is still down as they try to rework their facilities
that are now relocated to Waltham and reorganize the group of sysops.
No meeting this month - May 1994 (again!)
The next meeting of the BCS Telecommunications Group was scheduled for
Monday, May 23rd. This meeting will NOT take place as we have still not
been able to find a suitable location to hold our meetings.
YOUR HELP IS NEEDED.
We need to find a location which is easily accessible by MBTA, has
adequate and free parking, is easy to find, has a phone line available
for our local use, and which is free.
If you know of a such a free location where we can meet please leave a
message here on the board, call me daytime at 393-4900, 328-4012 in the
evening, or e-mail to bob@village.com or rgorrill@world.std.com or to
mrbob@delphi.com.

Subject: termination of this bbs
I am sorry to hear the management is going to eliminate all but 3 bbs, I will
call and voice my concern. What mismanagement! Raise the rent, but at least
get some people who can manage the BCS!
*** There is a reply. See #44.

Philip,
It is going to be the BCS membership voicing their concerns that can help to
keep the various BBS's alive. Remember, it is the membership dues that are
supporting the bulletin boards and all the members should be heard in this
matter.
My concern is that the dues are not being spent properly by those who are in
charge and that the various groups in the BCS are going to find themselves
virtually out of business with the exception of the major players. This is a
serious situation and one which could easily lead to the collapse of the
Boston Computer Society as a viable entity in the world of computing.
Communication IS VITAL to the survival of any organization and that means
both electronic and printed material. The cutbacks of all but three
publications - PC Report, Active Window and BCS Journal - shows that there is
a lack of understanding by those empowered to make the decisions as to the
proper course of action. BCS Magazine is going to be a shell insert in each
of those other 3 pubs and that is, IMNSHO, a major mistake and the wrong way
to go.
What should have happened is that the other pubs should have been rolled into
BCS Magazine which would then have generated a lot more revenue from
advertisers who would clamor to be in a major publication rather than to be
in segregated pubs as we now see happening.
Just my two cents worth Philip and we can only hope that we can effect a
turn-around that will open up the eyes of the Board of Directors to the
reality of what should be happening. They appear to have blinders on in
their efforts to stabilize the outflow of cash in the BCS. If they would
only bother to look beyond their local venue they might see that major
mistakes have been made but to try to rectify those mistakes by cutting off
one's nose to spite one's face is the wrong way to do it.
Bob
