The Modulation of Light with Micromechanics
                   Mark W. Miles
                President, Etalon, Inc.

The application of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) to
photonics is a burgeoning field which, though it has been pursued
for over a decade, has only recently begun to manifest commercial
devices. The size of MEMS devices makes them particularly suited
for the modulation of light using diffraction, reflection, or
interferometry. Typical structural motion ranges from 1/4 to
several microns. Such travel distances coupled with low power
consumption, decent speeds (up to 10 MHz for some structures) and
integration with active electronics has created the potential for
a plethora of new devices. These include tunable filters, optical
switches, and flat panel displays. Etalon has brought to bear a
unique fabrication process to the development of a new flat panel
display technology. The presentation will center around
MEMS/photonics applications in general, process issues, and flat
panel display applications in particular.
