Well, he is right in my experience.  One of my past girlfriends was fat but,
in my eyes, very pretty.  Most of my friends are computer programmers, which
reduced the notice, teasing, and sympathy from there, but many of the others
did engage so.  And the public in general is very image conscious.  She had
low self-esteem, perhaps as a result.  Low self-esteem results in behavior
that can damage even otherwise-healthy relationships (such as, regardless of
what's going on at home, trying to prove attractiveness at the workplace
simply because of societal views, resulting in infidelity.)

John was generalizing.  As a generality, it strikes me as often accurate.
