Cool, someone came out of the woodwork!

Do I ever agree! I went out with a couple of friends to a bar
recently, and NO THANKS, not for me.

So, what could these alternatives be? I've seen an ad in one of the
local papers about a "singles" club -- people who get together to
play Trivial Pursuit (remember Trivial Pursuit?), go to shows in
Boston, that sort of thing. Haven't had the chutzpah to try it,
yet. Other ideas?

Apalacian (sp?) Mountain Club

This is a group that has many singles that like the outdoors.

Community boating in Boston was a great place to meet people.

There are many swing dance events in the NE that attract many singles.
These seemed kinda like sock hops for kids in the 30-40ish range

Well were all your friends women? What I've found is that I have more fun
if I hang around with a mixed gender crowd. That way there is less pressure
pick up or be picked up. I was a late bloomer, and never did enjoy the scene
at bars until is started taking swing dance lessons. Now I have a bunch of
friends I hang with when I go to these places, and the emphasis is on having
a good time. Couples form naturally and over a period of several weeks or
months ( not in the course of 3 hours ! ;-p ) [Though it hasn't worked for me
yet ;-]

I started a group a few years ago called "For the Fun of It". It was never
very organized but we have done a lot of fun things together over the last
13 or so years. We race cars, spelunk, hold dances, have killer parties,
buy fun toys (boats etc), went to the world fair once, climb mountains, play
games.

I think that we might be able to start something here which could work like
that. The best part about this group is that it is brand new, and so it can
be anything we want it to be!

cheers!

There are also weekly contra-dance and square-dance events with open
admission where the rules are that everyone mix it up.

I'd be glad to host a visit to a dance with an introduction session beforehand.
Perhaps a dinner too to let people get to know each other.

A Tuesday or a Saturday are the best.

Let me know if you are interested or are an experienced dancer and would like
to help/socialize!

Don't forget Contra Dancing. Absolutely NOTHING beats Contra dancing
for meeting singles. For those not familiar with it, contra dances are
a sort of cross between square dancing and line dance. Partners are usually
grouped in sets of two (four people) and basically walk or jog (or whatever)
through a pattern which is controlled (and sometimes designed) by the caller.

The dances ALWAYS start with a 'walk through' of the basic pattern first so
that everyone knows what to do and beginners are encouraaged to come. I have
screwed up more contra dance lines than I care to think about, but everyone
is having so much fun that nobody cares :-)

You can usuall find them sponsored by community colleges, church groups.

The best part is that traditionally you are supposed to change
partners at every dance and women are encouraged (and do) ask
men to dance a set as often as men as the women.

Prepare to sweat a lot and get a lot of good exercise and have a
lot of fun. (Wear comfortable crepe soled shoes.)

May the farce be with you,
Rudy
