Another distribution question and "the usual"

Am I glad that someone got the ball rolling. I miss a day reading
the news, and lo and behold, there are 13 messages in ne.singles.
It's like the watched kettle that never boils. I was too chicken
to start posting myself and I thought maybe the group wasn't what
it seemed to be.

Obviously, the distribution of ne.singles would not be limited
to NY. And I know for a fact that one gets it in MA - aren't I
smart? But is there a way to globally limit distribution to NE
and NY? If people neglect to specify the distribution will the
postings go all over the world like in other groups? That would
be a pity. Where can I look up abbreviations that are understood
by usenet (for distribution)? Will "ne" work? "ne,ny"?

Anyway, I'd love to meet some people (or "talk" to them) who might
share some of my interests and characteristics. I just started
an assistant professorship in chemistry at Smith College in
Northampton, MA (in the middle of the state, equidistant from
Boston and Albany, Hartford and Burlington). I am a 29-yr-old
woman, an avid horse riding enthusiast who also loves to read
novels and mysteries, to travel in Europe, to dance (especially
ballroom dancing), and to converse (and who does not approve of
MENSA - no flame intended, just a statement of fact).

Whereas I would be ecstatic about, say, a Nobel prize or a gold
medal in an Olympic dressage competition, I would be content to
find some friends in the area who might like to go riding or
dancing with me. And if there were actually an interesting
MAN among them, that would be quite nice. (I am 5'7", slender,
and attractive, and I have brown hair and hazel eyes.)
Meanwhile, I am happy if I can find some people on the net to
"talk" to about anything and everything.

For this newsgroup, you don't need to specify a distribution. The
whole world isn't receiving this newsgroup -- only sites in "ne"
(whatever that covers) get it.

To answer your general question about distribution abbreviations,
I'll quote from The Whole Internet Catalog & User's Guide (by Ed
Krol):

"There is no way to find out exactly what distribution lists are
available for a server. There are a set of standard distributions
what are available on most servers, but they describe only wide
areas. They are:

  world Worldwide distribution (default)
  att Limited to AT&T
  can Limited to Canada
  eunet Limited to European sites
  na Limited to North America
usa Limited to the United States
IL,NY,FL... Limited to the specified state

The problem comes in with smaller, local distributions whose names
are made up by the local server's administrator. So only he can
tell you for sure."

I'd be interested to know which sites receive the "ne" newsgroups.
If you find out, please post the answer.
