   Regarding the vw alternator warning problem.  I experienced the
same thing a couple of years ago.  The warning light came on so I took
the car to a serviceman (not a vw dealer).  He said the alternator was
putting out the necessary current and the battery was being charged
properly.  The problem was a diode that was leaky.  The diode 
was in the circuitry of the warning light system.  Therefore it was not
an alternator problem to be concerned with.  The light has come on only
a couple of times in 2 years and remained on for only a few minutes.
