I just acquired an 800XL, unfortunately with no doc of any sort.  Does
anyone have a cogent description of the differences (from the software
point of view) from my old reliable 800?

The best source I have found for differences between the 800 and 800XL (as
well as 1200XL, 130XE, etc.) is Mapping The Atari, 1985 XL/XE revised edition.
