I have a question regarding the implementation of BILBO blocks (Built In Logic Block Observation techniques; Konemann, Mucha, and Zwiehoff; 1979 IEEE Test Conference Pg37-41). In a subsequent paper they make the statement that the BILBO registers should be built as long as possible (ie 32 bits wide for a 32 bit data path instead of four 8 bit registers next to each other). If I follow this advice for my current design I need registers from about 5 to 32 bits wide and a number in between. Where does one place the feedback taps so that the linear feedback shift-register produces a maximal length pseudo random sequence? Is there some method for determining these locations for any length register? Anyone have any experience with this sort of thing that they are willing to share?
