The second method is bound to be easier.  If you use alternate [F strings,
bib won't disambiguate references properly.  Use a citation template like
"3\*(((D\*())", and define parenthesizing macros by

	.ds (( (
	.ds )) )
	.de (
	.ds (( , \&
	.ds )) \&
	(\c
	..
	.de )
	.ds (( (
	.ds )) )
	)\\$1
	..

Now you can say

	results have been confirmed by [.smith jones.].

or

	results have been confirmed by others
	.(
	[.smith jones.]
	.) .
