In response to Sean Eric Fagan, my experience with trn until recently
is that if I answer "yes" to starting a new topic, my reply shows up
in a subsequent session with the same alphabetic letter as other new
replies to the old topic--they aren't given a separate alphabetic
retrieval letter.

Thus the newsgroup summary page says something like


a      ...... old topic name
       ......                another message with old topic name
        ..... new topic name

b       ......different thread
and you can't get new topic name without getting old topic
messages when you type "a".

Now, with the fix it says

a    ...... old topic name
    ........                another message with old topic name
b  .........new topic name
c     ......different thread
and you can read the new topic material by typing "b"
without having to read the old topic material if you don't want.

One still sees newsgroups with the new topic in the middle of
old topics, presumably because they are posted with some
other software, or an old version of trn, or because someone
has manually changed the "subject" field while composing
a reply.

However, since we both agree this is now fixed in our trn version,
there's little point in continuing this discussion.
