HELP needed on how to use MODEM in a bi-directional mode

Iam trying to setup UUCP on my system running on SUNOS.
I changed my modem from 2400 to PP9600SA and since then
iam having problems dialing-out/in unless and until I
modify /etc/ttytab. For instance if I have to dial out
I have to make sure that getty is not running otherwise
tip complains that the line is busy.
This problem wasn't their earlier when I was using smartmodem
2400.

Any kind of help would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks
in advance.
