My Microcom AX/9624c modem only connects at 2400 baud! :(

I just got a Microcom AX/9624c modem (which has a top speed of 9600 baud, but it also supports MNP Class 5 so it can reach effective speeds of 19.2k baud). But when I dial in to netcom, it only connects at 2400 baud! The Netcom help desk says that their modems are 9600 baud, so I really shouldn't be getting this slow speed. What am I doing wrong? Would someone who has this type of modem working at 9600 baud (or 19200 baud) please tell me what the settings are on his or her modem (front and back dip switches, and any software settings I need)? (If it helps, I'm connected via Versaterm 4.1.1 on a Macintosh, but I also have a copy of MacLayers.) Thanks!

This is a proprietary Microcom protocol, although licensed to DEC and Codex and maybe others. It does not support V.32, and will only talk to "standard 9600 baud" modems at 2400 bps. >The Netcom help desk says that their modems are 9600 baud, so I really >shouldn't be getting this slow speed. The person you talked to was probably not familiar the AX/9624c and assumed that it could support V.32. MNP6 is one of the less popular 9600 bps protocols and is not widely supported. -Steve

The AX/9624 uses a half-duplex 9600bps protocol proprietary to Microcom, and won't connect at 9600 with anything but another 9624 or a 9600+. It's obsolete. -- Thor Lancelot Simon tls@panix.COM "Oh, you have wounded me! I have very few prejudices, actually. The biggest problem is that I am intolerant of fools. Fortunately, I didn't buy it -- it's new, but it belongs to my employer. All I have to do i try to explain that I'll be using the modem for non-work purposes, and they should give me a REAL 9600 baud modem. Or maybe not. ;)
