This is a user interface from hell, but I tried it and it worked.

It should work with any POP3 mail, with the possible exception of AT&T
which, I believe, does not allow outside connections to their POP3
servers.

If you go to the top menu of the "card catalog", there is an entry for
"Worldwide Web". This puts you in the text-only web browser, Lynx.

Now, you can go to the URL "TELNET:/". (single slash)

When you get to the Telnet prompt, you say "open popd.ix.netcom.com 110".

When Netcom connects, you go:

user <your login>

[wait for response]

pass <your password>

[wait for response]

(do NOT USE the extra "#" or "US,PPP," which you need in Trumpet or Win95
DUN for a Netcom-ix user name)

*** WARNING--LOOK OUT FOR SHOULDER SURFERS--the TELNET program does local
echoing (the POP3 server does no echoing) so you SEE the password ***

to retrieve message 5, type "retr 5"

to delete message 8, type "dele 8"

At the end, type "quit".

For more POP3 instructions, look up ftp://nic.ddn.mil/rfc/rfc1725.txt
