Adding SCSI devices to Amiga 3000

Okay. I hope to hell someone else has had this problem cuz it is
confusing the Bejeezus out of me. Maybe I'm doing something really
obviously wrong, but I like to think I know about SCSI devices seeing as
I set them up and configure them for my Mac and IBM "friends" (You can't
call a non-amiga owner a true friend, in my book =).
When I bought my Amiga 3000, I took the Harddrive from my 2000 and
swapped it in there. I had removed the terminating resistors from my
Harddrive (Quantum) when it was in the 2000 because the 2000 also had an
internal CD ROM drive. I forgot to terminate the Quantum when I put it
in the 3000, but for some reason it worked just fine. So I didn't bother
to terminate it when I ran across the resistors in my desk drawer. The
Quantum was magically working unterminated... so why sweat it?
Last week I bought a new Maxtor drive. The Amiga 3000 only fits two 1"
drives or one Half-height drive. Although my new Maxtor is a 1", the old
Quantum is Half-height so I'll have to use it for something else once I
have copied the contents onto the Maxtor.
The Quantum is device 0. It is on the 3000's built-in controller (of
course). The Maxtor, is device 6, I just left the jumpers set to factory
default right now, which is 6. (Yes, I looked. I don't believe
everything I read in manuals.) The Maxtor is properly Terminated. I
should be able to just plug it into the power and make it the last device
on the SCSI ribbon and copy the Quantum onto the Maxtor and wash my hands.
So when I plug in the Maxtor and power-up, my 3000 starts up and loads
my ROMimage off of the Quantum. (It's one of the old 3000s that loaded
their ROMs from whichever device was named WB_2.x.) It loads the ROM
image fine and reboots. Once it reboots, it cannot find the Quantum
drive. It finds the Maxtor, which is useless due to it having nothing on it.
I was able to low-level format the Maxtor like this: I power up with
only Quantum connected to power. My ROM image loads... Amiga reboots...
Amiga finds Quantum just fine and loads workbench. Then I plug the power
into Maxtor. HDToolBox then recognizes both drives and I can partition
and low level format Maxtor. Of course, in order to save the new
settings and mount it, I have to reboot. As soon as it reboots, the
Amiga once again can't find Quantum. Even holding down both mouse
buttons at startup and listing all the devices won't show me Quantum. If
there's power to Maxtor, Quantum don't exist... unless of course I boot
with Quantum and then plug in Maxtor later.
The weirdest thing is, it DOES find Quantum long enough to load the ROM
images from disk... then it disappears.
I swore. I figgered I'm doing something wrong and I set Maxtor on the
shelf to worry about later.
Then I got my external CD ROM drive out and plugged it in. External CD
ROM drive is currently set to device 5. It is terminated. If I power up
with CDROM drive attached and turned on, the system AGAIN can't find
Quantum after loading the ROM images.
To sum up: The system can't find my unterminated device 0 quantum
harddrive unless it is the only SCSI device getting power. (Its not a
power problem either or the CDROM drive wouldn't puke... it's powered
externally). The only exception is before the Amiga 3000 loads it's ROM
images, in which case it does find Quantum long enough to load it's ROMs.
Does anyone have any idea? I'd be so grateful for advice.

The terminators are there to impedance-match the scsi bus. By
adding another device you changed the load and the signal bounced around
like a love-sick jackrabbit. Same thing can happen if you double-terminate
the bus by mistake.

WRT why did it work before. You were lucky.... ;-)

First, some 3000s have terminating resistors on the motherboard (three
total). That may explain why the Quantum didn't need termination (though in
that case, the motherboard resistors should be removed and the Quantum be
terminated).
Second, the Quantum may be initializing AFTER the Maxtor and may not be seen
by the bus. You could try reversing the ID order (Quantum at 6, Maxtor at
0) or try enabling the 2 second timeout using something like BattMem. I
have to do it with a Quantum 210 and a 340. The 340 boots up faster. I
could put the WB on this drive and all would be OK as by the time the boot
is finished, the 210 is seen and the partitions are available.

Actually, that's three options to try. :) You can try popping WB on the
Maxtor after making the Quantum unbootable.
Good luck,
