You're right, I've never had that happen.  That's because I wrote a
daemon that watches the designated disk partition and takes proactive
actions when space or inodes get short.  The program is called 
ichk and was posted to comp.sources.misc a year or so ago.

Philosophically, I'd rather have one program whose job is to keep
things off the edge of the envelope than to have to try and make
every piece of software I use absolutely stable on the boundaries.
