re: Cat Yronwode, Unifying force of the Usenet


On a positive note...

Despite the continuing exasperation of the Usenet community with Cat
Yronwode's behavior, I submit there have been some positive results
from a generally sorry episode.

1.   Many who have long appreciated the contributions of Fletcher
Mattox have an occasion to tell him so.  As others have eloquently
noted, we don't often enough say "thanks" to people like Fletcher,
who work year after year to make the Usenet a valuable resource.

2.   The criticism of Yronwode's costly lack of manners is actually
a healthy means of maintaining democratic control of our own online
community. I don't ever recall seeing such unity among the eclectic
netizens of the Usenet and Internet world.

3.   And finally, a lighterhearted bonus.  It just may be that our
brand new "austin.internet" now holds the record for fastest growth
in a local hierarchy newsgroup.  (I'm not certain this is true, but
around here we're always looking for opportunities to turn the Tower
orange. (A University of Texas tradition whenever we celebrate major
victories and championships.)
