Of course, writing an access control module for the gateway, maintaining
long lists of "allowed" and "disallowed" site rules, answering the
inevitable questions "but WHYYYYYYY" and "I pay taxes, how dare you
restrict a public service" and so forth are not work.

Heck, even changing the code to bounce messages from "disallowed" sites
instead of simply dropping them on the floor is work.  If you don't think
it is, I'd like to see your code.  Tomorrow.  Don't forget to keep the CPU
impact down; this is a busy gateway machine and we can't spend a lot of
CPU on this.

If you've got to set up the gateway to send a bounce message, may as well
go whole-hog and shut it down; it's easier to bounce EVERYTHING than to
only bounce some things.

However, since running a gateway of this sort is so easy and requires so
little time, effort, and resources, I'm looking forward to your new,
public service, mail-to-news gateway at yronwode.com.  What's taking you
so long?

And don't forget to *politely* restrict access when you get overloaded, or
some clueless AOL person will scream and rant about how dare you restrict
their PUBLIC service.  Heck, even if you are polite, they'll probably
scream and rant anyway.
