Regarding AOL news bug

On The morning of 2 March 1994, USENET system maintainers at America
Online discovered a small but critical bug in its news posting software.
As a result of this bug, approximately one thousand extraneous news articles
(duplicates) were generated and sent to the USENET.

When the bug was discovered steps were immediately taken to stem the
tide of outgoing articles, including issuing cancels for the offending
messages.

On behalf of America Online, we apologize for the inadvertent
blanketing; we regret the inevitable inconvenience which has resulted from
this bug. We would also like to direct a particular apology to any of our
users who may have received undue criticism for a problem which did not
result from their actions. We are confident that the bug which caused the
extraneous copies has been excised and that this event will not happen in
the future.

Sincerely,
Bob Pearson
