As doc/install in the distribution says, "Be sure to make the second
field more than five digits wide, by adding leading zeroes (ten digits
is a conservative width)."

You should lock the news system with "locknews" and edit your active
file, by hand or with a sed script, to put extra zeroes in fron of the
second field.  You can do this for all groups, or just for the ones
that need more space now (e.g., soc.motss, it looks like) on your
system.
