If being 8 bit clean means you can get a new generation of multimedia, rich text and binary newsgroups that you just can't get any other way, you'll upgrade. We plan next year to start introducing wirephotos along with our electronic newspaper feed. They are big -- some up to a megabyte, and I just don't see putting them out encoded in printable characters or split over articles. While I am always willing to take user input, I want to try saying, "You want these pictures, you have to run software that can take 1 megabyte raw binaries." I think most of our customers already are running this, and of course we don't expect every customer to take these photos, if only because they are so large and not everybody has hardware to display them easily. We put out around 2mb of news each day right now, but these photos would increase it a great deal. I expect only our NNTP fed customers would have the bandwidth for it. In addition, we'll need MIME display patches for existing newsreaders, and eventually new newsreaders. Possibly this will spur it on. -- Brad Templeton, ClariNet Communications Corp. -- Sunnyvale, CA 408/296-0366
