"Alias" file in C news

Question: does C news use the "alias" file anymore?

Suggestion: I understand that there's probably a performance penalty in
having to look at a second file besides active, but it seems like this
would be a good place to permanently park a number of groups. I went
through and deleted about a hundred groups as either too inactive to
bother with or replaced by other groups. It would be nice to put these
groups once in a file that C news understands and forget about them. I
won't have to try to remember whether alt.some.silly.thing is a new
group or just somebody playing with an old dead group.

If the performance hit is too bad to use a file other than active, maybe
newsdaily could delete references to articles whose newsgroup line is
found in "alias".

The objection to keeping them as "=something.else" is that some newsreader
programs seem to understand the "=" syntax, but others don't.

No. It never has. (C News is a from-scratch reimplementation, not a
variant of B News.)
