I have the 3rd field of my active file set to 0000000001 when a group is
created. Should this be 00001 or does it matter? I ask because C News
(perf release) does not appear to be updating this field.
SunOS 4.1.2

Having it set to 0000000001 is fine.

C News hasn't been updating that field for a long time. You can
accomplish that with $NEWSBIN/expire/upact or with the updatemin
program (which resides on my system in $NEWSBIN/maint).

The upact or updatemin program will do the update, but you have to arrange
to run it -- it's not something that gets done automatically.  We run
updatemin once a week.

The number of leading zeros in the third field doesn't matter, since it
(unlike the second field) is not updated in place.  Upact/updatemin will
widen it if need be.
