Greetings. After spending much happy time using rn, I have now been put on a machine using nn and lo and behold, things just don't work the same. Couple of questions: How do I search for a new newsgroup using only a keyword and then have it added to my .newsrc? In rn, you just use the 'l' (for look) command and it gives you a list. You can then 'g'o to whichever one you want. The closest I've found on nn is -mxX -sSubject all. This just merges all newsgroups with given subject into one, let's me read them and then doesn't add them to my .newsrc. What's worse, it doesn't even tell me what groups I'm looking at! This is very frustrating. Also, how do I tell nn _not_ to search for new newsgroups every time I invoke it? I've gone through an nn manual, but it hasn't seemed to help. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. -- Noel Estabrook | Knowledge without action is like nestabro@nova.gmi.edu --|-- snow on a hot stove. > How do I search for a new newsgroup using only a keyword and then have it > added to my .newsrc? here is an answer that will appear in the soon-to-be-posted new faq. to actually add the newsgroup, you'll have to 'G'o to it and 'U'n-unsubscribe to it. hmmm, hell of a mnemonic. just had a thought: have 'U'nsubscribe just unsubscribe; have 'G' offer to subscribe to a newsgroup when going to an unsubscribed newsgroup. comments? Subject: + How can I see which newsgroups are available? From: Using nn-50 To see a list of all news groups with a short description, use the command ":post" and type '?'. To list groups that match a regular expression (ie. pattern), use "/pattern" instead of '?'. --<Sven Guckes> guckes@math.fu-berlin.de Also try using '?' when going to a group with the 'G' command. Note that successive '?'s will display more groups when there is not enough room to display all choices at once. Group completion is achieved with ' ' (space). Finally, the program "nnsub" can be used to easily view newsgroup names and descriptions and also to subscribe to groups. This program will appear in the "contrib" area of the sources in 6.4.19. What's worse, it doesn't even tell me what groups > I'm looking at! This is very frustrating. when you read the articles, the newsgroup that the article belongs to appears in the bottom line. also, if you don't merge them with 'm', then articles will be presented in their respective newsgroup. > Also, how do I tell nn _not_ to search for new newsgroups every time I > invoke it? remove NEW from your presentation sequence. if you don't have one, create one to override the system presentation sequence (usually found in /usr/local/lib/nn/init). see the pertinent section in the man page for details. > I've gone through an nn manual, but it hasn't seemed to help.
