If the help file explains how, I can't see it. Is there a way to mark some files as read, while leaving others unread? Sort of like a "Clear messages 1-100, but leave the reast alone"-type thing? This is the ONE thing I miss from rn. Other than that, tin beats it with a stick. For those that don't understand (I seem to have problems putting down thoughts well today) I mean the rn command "1-100j", is there a way do to this with TIN? Howard Wilson II -- Stile, Howard Wilson II, and any other names I might use can be reached at: stile@okcforum.uoknor.edu | I have two personalities. One is paranoid, I speak for no one but myself! | and the other is out to get him. Send mail for information on The Darwinners and the Evolving Fish!

I would like to see something like this also. Currently I hack the .newsrc file to accomplish this. -- ******************************************************************************* * Bill Ranck ranck@joesbar.cc.vt.edu * * Computing Center at Virginia Tech, not Vermont ----------------------^^ * *******************************************************************************

Or if it is, it's a major secret. I just asked that a few days ago and no-one could answer. I have a little more hope that this is possible in GNUS, but no-one has explained a good way to implement it for any threaded newsreader. With GNUS you can do it with the "&" command if you turn threading off first, but that's not very helpful. I suppose that setting the number of articles to view at a time would work too, and you could finish the whole buffer, exit, and re-enter as many times as required. That's a bit of a pain too, and requires a lot of forethought. Wigh GNUS it should be possible to mark a region in the buffer, then write a function or adapt an existing one (which one?) to scan through that region and mark all the articles in it as read. For tin or some other newsreader you should still be able to keep the idea of a start and end point (marked by mouse click, article number, start of buffer, current point, ...) but I have no idea how the marking as read would get done. I'm considering going back to old fashioned unthreaded reading, partly because of this problem. emailed or posted solutions are most welcome. -- # Hugh D. Gamble, NTT Systems Inc. Use the 'K' command to mark the current article/thread as read. Tin does not understand the concept of ranges and commands that can use them. Iain
